The HPI visa lets recent top-university graduates live and work in the UK for 2–3 years — no job offer, no endorsement, no sponsor needed. Eligibility is checklist-based: right university, right graduation date, right English evidence.
What is the High Potential Individual visa?
Launched in May 2022, the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is the UK's route for recent graduates of globally ranked universities. Unlike almost every other UK work visa, there is no employer involved. You don't need a job offer, a sponsor, or an endorsing body to approve your application. If you tick the boxes, you apply directly to the Home Office.
The visa lasts 2 years for bachelor's and master's graduates, and 3 years for PhD holders. During that time you can work for any UK employer, switch jobs freely, freelance, or even start a company.
What can you actually do on it?
- Work for any UK employer — no sponsorship needed
- Switch jobs or employers as many times as you like
- Be self-employed or freelance
- Start your own company
- Bring your partner and dependent children
- Travel in and out of the UK freely
- Switch to another visa from within the UK
- Extend the HPI visa — there is no extension route
- Use HPI time to count towards indefinite leave to remain (ILR)
- Work as a professional sportsperson or coach
- Access most public funds
- Apply for a second HPI visa — you only get one attempt
How does it compare to other post-study routes?
The most important comparison is with the Graduate visa — both are no-job-offer, post-study routes. The difference is simple: the Graduate visa is for people who studied at a UK university. The HPI is for people who studied at an approved overseas university. They don't overlap.
Compared to the Global Talent visa: GTV requires you to go through an endorsement process (submitting evidence of your career impact), has no degree requirement, leads to ILR in 3–5 years, and lasts up to 5 years. HPI is faster to apply for but shorter, and doesn't give you a path to permanent residence directly.
