The UK High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is one of the most straightforward routes into the UK job market — no job offer, no employer sponsor, no points to accumulate. If you graduated from one of the Home Office's approved global universities within the last five years, you can apply.
This guide covers everything: the approved university list, the 5-year graduation window, English language requirements, the Ecctis certificate, document checklist, fees, and what you can (and can't) do once you're on the visa.
The approved university list is updated every November. The current list (2025–26) includes 80 universities. Always verify your institution against the official list before applying.
What is the HPI visa?
The High Potential Individual visa was introduced in May 2022 to attract recent graduates of high-ranking global universities to the UK. Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, there is no requirement to have a job lined up. Unlike the Global Talent visa, there is no endorsement process — eligibility is essentially automatic if you meet the criteria.
The visa lasts 2 years for bachelor's and master's graduates, and 3 years for PhD holders. You can work for any employer, be self-employed, or freelance. You can bring dependants. You cannot extend the visa or use it to count towards indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
Who qualifies?
To be eligible you must satisfy all of the following:
- Your degree was awarded by a university on the Home Office approved global universities list
- Your degree was awarded within the last 5 years (measured from the award date, not the ceremony date)
- You meet the English language requirement (by nationality, degree taught in English, or a SELT test)
- You have not previously been granted a UK Graduate visa
- You have not previously entered the UK as a Doctorate Extension Scheme student
- You have not previously applied for the HPI visa (you only get one attempt)
The approved university list
The Home Office publishes a list of approved universities each November, covering the academic year running from November to October. The list is based on four global ranking systems: QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU/Shanghai), and The Financial Times Global MBA Ranking.
For 2025–26, 80 universities from 22 countries are approved. Key countries include the United States (around 28 universities), China, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and several European nations.
UK universities are NOT on the HPI list — the visa is explicitly designed for overseas graduates. If you studied at Oxford, Cambridge, or Imperial, look at the Graduate visa instead.
Which year's list applies to you?
This is where many people get confused. The list year that applies depends on when your degree was awarded — not when you apply for the visa.
- Graduated November or December of a given year → that year's list applies
- Graduated January–October of a given year → the previous year's list applies
Example: if you graduated in June 2023, the 2022–23 list (published November 2022) is the relevant one. Our free checker automatically applies the correct list for your graduation date.
Not sure which list covers your graduation date?
Check your university now — freeThe 5-year window
Your qualification must have been awarded within 5 years of the date you apply for the visa. The Home Office uses the award date shown on your degree certificate — not the ceremony date, which can differ by months.
If you completed a bachelor's degree in 2020 but received a master's in 2023, the master's degree clock applies (as long as it's from an approved university).
English language requirement
You must demonstrate English at CEFR B2 level or above. There are four ways to satisfy this:
- 1Exempt nationality — you're a national of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, or one of 13 other specified English-speaking countries
- 2Degree taught in English — Ecctis confirms your degree was delivered in English (most common route for HPI applicants)
- 3Approved SELT test — IELTS for UKVI, Trinity SELT, LanguageCert, or PTE Academic at B2+ level
- 4UK GCSE or A-level in English — studied in England, Scotland, or Wales before age 18
The Ecctis certificate — what it is and why it matters
Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) is the organisation that verifies overseas qualifications for the Home Office. For the HPI visa, you almost certainly need an Ecctis certificate — it confirms both your degree level and that your programme was taught in English.
The Ecctis assessment costs £252 including VAT. It typically takes 2–4 weeks, though express options exist. Apply as soon as you decide to pursue the HPI — it's the longest lead-time item in the process.
Document checklist
- Valid passport or travel document
- Ecctis qualification verification certificate
- English language evidence (usually the Ecctis certificate)
- Bank statements showing £1,270 saved for at least 28 consecutive days
- TB test certificate (if you're from a country on the designated list)
The £1,270 maintenance requirement is waived if you've held a valid UK visa for 12+ months continuously before applying.

What you can and cannot do
On the HPI visa you can: work for any UK employer without restriction; be self-employed or freelance; bring your partner and dependent children; travel in and out of the UK freely; switch to another visa from within the UK.
You cannot: extend the HPI visa; accumulate time towards indefinite leave to remain (ILR); work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach; access most public funds.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for the HPI visa from inside the UK?
Yes — you can switch to the HPI visa from most other visa categories while you are already in the UK, as long as you meet all the eligibility criteria.
What happens after the HPI visa expires?
You cannot extend the HPI visa. You would need to switch to another visa — typically a Skilled Worker visa (if you have a job offer), or the Global Talent visa if you've built a strong enough track record. The HPI does not count towards settlement.
Does the HPI visa count towards ILR?
No. Time spent on the HPI visa does not count towards the 5-year continuous residence required for indefinite leave to remain.
Can I bring my family on the HPI visa?
Yes. Your partner and dependent children can apply as dependants. They face the same restrictions as you (no access to most public funds, no professional sport).
My university was on the 2023 list but not 2025. Can I still apply?
Yes — as long as your university was on the approved list for the year your degree was awarded. The relevant list is determined by your graduation date, not your application date.
