How Long Does the UK Global Talent Visa Take in 2025?

From starting your application to holding your visa — the realistic timeline, current processing times, and how to avoid the delays that slow most applicants down.

One of the most common questions from GTV applicants: how long is this actually going to take? The answer has two parts: how long to prepare, and how long the official processes take. Here's the complete picture.

The overall timeline at a glance

Total realistic range: 10 weeks (fast, well-prepared) to 25+ weeks (slower preparation, maximum processing times).

Stage 1: Preparation (4–8 weeks)

This is the stage entirely within your control — and the one most applicants underestimate. Building your evidence portfolio means: selecting your evidence, obtaining written confirmation of achievements, gathering metrics, organising documents, and writing your personal statement.

The most common time sink: waiting for referees. Give referees at least 3 weeks' notice, ideally 4–6 weeks. People are busy, and chasing a referee for a letter at the last minute increases the chance of a rushed, weak letter.

Stage 2: DSIT endorsement (3–8 weeks)

Once you submit your endorsement application and pay the £456 fee, DSIT (the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology) aims to assess your application within 8 weeks. In practice, many decisions come in 3–5 weeks, though this varies with volume.

You'll receive an email notification when a decision is made. If endorsed, you have 3 months to submit your visa application.

DSIT does not offer a paid priority service for endorsement assessments. The 8-week timeline is the same for all applicants.

Stage 3: Visa application (3 weeks standard, 5 days priority)

After receiving your endorsement letter, you apply to the Home Office for the actual visa. The standard processing time is around 3 weeks. The Priority service (currently £500 additional fee) reduces this to 5 business days.

The Super Priority service (£1,000) aims for a next-working-day decision, though availability varies and is not always offered for GTV.

How to speed up your application

  • Start gathering evidence and letters at the same time — don't finish writing your statement before approaching referees
  • Give referees a briefing document — it speeds up letter production significantly
  • Have all documents scanned and ready before you start the application portal
  • Book your biometric appointment proactively — don't wait for prompts
  • Use priority visa processing if time matters

Common causes of delay

  • Waiting for slow referees (most common delay)
  • Incomplete or unclear evidence requiring DSIT clarification
  • Biometric appointment availability in your location
  • Delays in obtaining Ecctis or other qualification documents
  • Application submitted with missing supporting documents

Frequently asked questions

Can I work while my endorsement application is pending?

Not on the basis of the pending GTV application. If you're already in the UK on another visa that permits work, you can continue to work on that visa. If you're applying from outside the UK, you need to wait for the visa decision.

My endorsement was granted. How long do I have to submit the visa application?

You have 3 months from the date of your endorsement letter to submit the visa application to the Home Office.

Can I travel to the UK while my visa application is being decided?

If you're applying from outside the UK, no — you should wait for your visa decision. Attempting to enter on a different basis while a visa application is pending can create complications.
