Quick answer: yes, in two ways. You can be sponsored for a part-time role, but the Home Office checks your actual annual pay, not a full-time equivalent, so you must still meet the full salary threshold. You can also take a second job of up to 20 hours a week outside your sponsored hours, if it is in an eligible occupation.
“Can a Skilled Worker work part-time?” usually means one of two things. Can your sponsored job itself be part-time? Or can you add part-time work on top of it? The answers differ, and getting either wrong can put your visa at risk.
Can your sponsored job be part-time?
Yes, but the salary test does not shrink with your hours. For most new applications from 22 July 2025, you must be paid at least £41,700 a year and at least the going rate for your occupation. The two tests work differently for part-time roles:
- Going rates assume a 37.5-hour week and are pro-rated for other hours.
- The flat annual threshold does not reduce, so a part-time role must still clear it in absolute terms.
- The Home Office counts pay for up to 48 hours a week.
- Pay must also meet an hourly minimum of £17.13.
Worked example: a 25-hour-a-week role with a full-time going rate of £45,000 has a pro-rated going rate of £30,000. But the general threshold still requires £41,700 a year — roughly £32 an hour at 25 hours a week. That is why genuine part-time sponsorship is rare outside well-paid roles.
Some workers qualify for lower thresholds. New entrants can be sponsored from £33,400 and 70% of the going rate. People who have held Skilled Worker leave continuously since before 4 April 2024 can extend under lower transitional thresholds. From 8 April 2026, salaries are also assessed pay period by pay period, which matters for variable or reduced hours.
Can you reduce your hours after being sponsored?
Only if your pay still meets the salary rules for your visa. Talk to your sponsor and get advice before agreeing to fewer hours. It matters for your future too: if your salary drops below the required level before you apply for settlement, the application is likely to be refused on salary grounds.
Can you take a second part-time job?
Yes. This is called “supplementary employment”, and it is allowed if all of these apply:
- It is no more than 20 hours a week and outside your sponsored working hours.
- You keep doing your sponsored job.
- It is in a higher-skilled eligible occupation, on the Immigration Salary List, or in the same sector and at the same level as your main job.
A nurse picking up extra nursing shifts elsewhere usually fits. A software engineer doing weekend food deliveries usually does not. Medium-skilled second jobs are only allowed if you were first sponsored before 22 July 2025 and have held continuous permission since.
If the work qualifies, you do not need another Certificate of Sponsorship or to tell the Home Office first. If it is over 20 hours or outside these categories, you need a new Certificate of Sponsorship before starting the second role.
Overtime, volunteering and side businesses
- Overtime for your sponsor is unlimited, as long as the duties stay within the role on your Certificate of Sponsorship.
- Volunteering is allowed when it is genuinely unpaid and does not resemble a paid role or displace a paid worker.
- Work for your own business is only lawful if it meets the supplementary employment rules. Take advice before freelancing or starting a side business.
What a breach costs
Going over the 20-hour cap, even unintentionally, can be treated as unauthorised work. That can lead to your visa being cut short or future applications refused, and your sponsor can face compliance action.
Want more flexibility than sponsorship allows?
If you would rather not be tied to one employer, another route may suit you better. The Global Talent visa is not linked to a sponsor at all. The Innovator Founder visa lets you run your own business and also work outside it, in jobs needing at least a level 3 qualification.
